Priorities: The Democrats are the Party of Abortion

On the Fourth of July this year, Senator Chuck Schumer took to twitter to say, “Today, I am celebrating the FREEDOM of women to make their own health care decisions, as established by the Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade.” It seems to be a bit odd to celebrate the death of a baby on July 4th, but the Senate Minority Leader didn’t hesitate. His views are largely in step with that of the Democrat party.

Senator Elizabeth Warren, in a highly publicized speech on the Senate floor said, “The Republicans have had a plan for years to strip away women’s rights to make choices over our own bodies.” It is no surprise that she has a 100% rating with the Pro-Abortion group NARAL. Old Socialist Bernie Sanders, not to be outdone, said, “I have a lifetime 100% pro-choice voting record. I understand that people disagree on this issue, but I believe that it is a woman’s decision, it’s a difficult decision, but it’s a decision between her and her physician. I will do everything that I can in 50 states of this country to make sure that women have a choice.”

The new kid on the block, Democrat Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Catholic, goes against the teaching of her church. She wants a newly nationalized health care sector to “grant open access to safe, legal, affordable abortion … for all people, regardless of income.”

The old-guard Democrats and the new, progressive, socialist activists don’t agree on every issue. One thing they do unite around, though, is abortion. Nowhere is that more clearly seen than in their ridiculous and insidious attacks on President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. “There’s every reason to believe he would overturn Roe,” California Sen. Dianne Feinstein said during a pro-abortion rally in front of the Supreme Court. Dana Singiser, the vice president for public policy and government relations at Planned Parenthood Federation of America, one of the Democrats’ favorite organizations, told reporters about Kavanaugh’s nomination, “The right to access abortion safely and legally in this country is clearly on the line.”

While there are some in the Republican party who are pro-abortion, the majority is not. Abortion rights are a cause of the political Left. The Democrats not only want to make abortion a legal choice, they seem to revel in and celebrate abortions. Comedian Michelle Wolf released a video on July 4th that’s jam-packed with flag-waving, toe-tapping, muscularly patriotic symbolism that is called a “Tribute to Abortion.” In it she mockingly proclaims, “God bless abortions and God bless America!”

After her vote to support late-term abortions, Senator Schumer high-fived and then clasped the hand of Senator Heidi Heitkamp on the floor of the U.S. Senate in January of this year. Senator Heitkamp is up for re-election this year in North Dakota and will attempt to pass herself off as a “moderate”. Voters in the Peace Garden State should know that she, at least in that moment, was happy to cast a vote in favor of late-term abortions.

The Democrats have been the party of abortion for a long time. That’s why I was surprised to read about an event that happened a few days ago in Denver. I’m guessing you didn’t hear much about it either. Last weekend the Democrats for Life of America met with this simple message, “We want our party back.” Media outlets who normally fawn over any gathering of Democrats avoided this event like the plague. While numbers for the March for Life are easily accessible, I could not find an attendance count for this event, even on the DFLA website. I’m not surprised, though. In their own promotional material, the DFLA writes, “Once tolerated, pro-life Democrats have been mostly ostracized by the Democratic Party for a generation now.”

The Democrats and their media allies are firmly on the side of Planned Parenthood and the culture of abortion. There isn’t much tolerance and certainly no promotion for those who are pro-life. This isn’t your daddy’s Democrat party. It’s a party that is characterized by progressive thinking, a bent toward socialism and lawlessness. These things are their creed. Abortion is their sacrament.

The two political parties could not be further apart on this issue than they are. We will see it play out on cable news stations as Judge Kavanaugh appears before the Senate’s Judiciary Committee in a few months. Democrats and their media allies will bemoan the demise of freedom and portray Kavanaugh as on oppressive, judgmental ogre who seeks to turn back the clock one hundred years. They will likely fail in sabotaging his appointment. When they do, they will take all their venom and animosity into the midterm elections.

That’s where we have to come in. Those of us who believe in the sanctity of life and understand that life is a gift from God must be energized and ready to vote. The party of abortion will be ready. We’ll have to be ready, too.
