It’s yet another incident where aligning yourself with the latest leftist cause ends up outraging the very group you’re trying to impress.
But what did she expect? Bitterness and outrage is like meat and drink to Leftist activists.
Scarlett Johansson was ready to start shooting a film called ‘Rub and Tub’ about a transgendered massage parlor owner.
You’d think that having an actual A-list actress backing a film like that would be something they would celebrate.
You’d be wrong. That’s mostly because you would have underestimated the ability of these thin-skinned activists to get their panties(?) in a twist.
And in the end, that same petulant outrage might kill the whole project, rather than have a film go forward that would push their narrative with the ‘wrong’ person acting in it.
“The future of ‘Rub & Tug’ is in limbo following Scarlett Johansson’s exit from the project because of objections to her playing a trans man,” The Wrap reports. “According to an individual with knowledge of the project, it is unclear if ‘Rub & Tug’ will actually go into production. The insider indicated it doesn’t look good for the movie, which still has director Rupert Sanders attached.”
Johansson’s production company, These Pictures, was set to co-produce the film, but now that she’s no longer starring in the project, “it’s unclear” if the company will stay on, The Wrap reports. Also unclear is whether Joel Silver’s production company Silver Pictures will move forward with the project if These Pictures pulls out.
After backlash from transgender activists over a “cisgender” actor playing a transgender role, Johansson announced last week that she would pull out of playing Dante “Tex” Gill, a female massage parlor owner during the ’70s and ’80s who “prefer[red] to be known as a man,” according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s obituary of Gill.
Here is the statement she gave to Out Magazine, with their response:
I have great admiration and love for the trans community and am grateful that the conversation regarding inclusivity in Hollywood continues,” she said. “While I would have loved the opportunity to bring Dante’s story and transition to life, I understand why many feel he should be portrayed by a transgender person, and I am thankful that this casting debate, albeit controversial, has sparked a larger conversation about diversity and representation in film.”
Johansson had originally defended her position by pointing to other cisgender actors who had played trans, including Jeffrey Tambor in Transparent, but her statement makes clear that she’s had a change of heart. Among those who had been critical of her decision was the transgender actress Trace Lysette, who has worked on Amazon’s Transparent, and who wrote, “I wouldn’t be as upset if I was getting in the same rooms as Jennifer Lawrence and Scarlett for cis roles, but we know that’s not the case.”
GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis welcomed Johansson’s decision as a “game changer,” while the transgender writer and actor Jen Richards tweeted, “To exhibit the spirit of generosity I earnestly want to see more of, I am going to take Scarlett Johansson at her word that she listened to feedback, realized that despite her intentions this was going to cause harm, and made the right decision to step down. Well done.”
Insisting that a Russian woman play Black Widow?
That would be awkward, wouldn’t it?
