Will ‘Innocent Until Proven Guilty’ Survive The Democrat Media Circus?
Will Durant, in his book The Story of Philosophy: The Lives and Opinions of the World’s Greatest Philosophers wrote, “A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself within.” This quote rings ominously as we watch the spectacle unfolding in the swamp of our nation’s capital.
Judge Brett Kavanaugh is being savaged by the left because he has the audacity to be an originalist when it comes to the U.S. Constitution and is a conservative appointed by President Donald Trump. Almost everyone is aware of the uncorroborated accusation by Dr. Christine Ford that more than thirty years ago Judge Kavanaugh, as a teen, sexually assaulted her. A hearing is scheduled for tomorrow in which Kavanaugh and Ford are slated to appear.
That charge was followed by a ridiculously baseless accusation printed in a New Yorker article by Ronan Farrow and Jane Mayer that asserted, while at Yale, Kavanaugh exposed himself to Deborah Ramirez. This charge is so weak that the New York Times reported in an article on September 23rd, that it interviewed “several dozen people over the past week” to corroborate Ramirez’s claim but “could find no one with firsthand knowledge.”
The left is reacting in a blind rage of hate, marked by lies, deceit and character assassination. It is perhaps the most despicable moment of the resistance in a long series of vile acts. As bad as that is, what’s worse is that they are now chipping away at the foundation on which our great nation was built.
The Democrats and their media accomplices are making a mockery of justice. In an 1895 Supreme Court opinion, Coffin v. United States, Justice Edward Douglas White wrote, “The principle that there is a presumption of innocence in favor of the accused is the undoubted law, axiomatic and elementary, and its enforcement lies at the foundation of the administration of our criminal law.” This case establishes the concept that a person is innocent until proven guilty.
For 123 years the United States has maintained this principle. Today the Democrats and the media blithely trash this principle with respect to Judge Kavanaugh. Here’s a quick sampling of the Democrats’ thinking. In the Atlantic on September 21, 2018, Benjamin Wittes writes, “Kavanaugh himself bears the burden of proof.” Senator Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) declared in an interview last Sunday that Kavanaugh, does not deserve the presumption of innocence when it comes to sexual assault allegations against him because she disagrees with his judicial philosophy. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Connecticut) said on Morning Joe, “we have a constitutional duty to get to the bottom of these allegations. They are serious, and credible, and now the person with the most knowledge about them, namely Judge Brett Kavanaugh has a responsibility to come forward with evidence to rebut them.”
Did you catch that? The Democrats slime and attack Judge Kavanaugh with baseless and unsubstantiated accusations and it is his responsibility to prove he didn’t do it. This is a dangerous place for our nation to be. If Judge Kavanaugh can be attacked this way, then anyone can be. The presumption of innocence is vital to our republic. If we allow the Democrats to trash it, the consequences could be devastating.
Not content to eviscerate justice, the Democrats have gone all in to destroy integrity and decency. The Democrats’ duplicity is easy to see. Senator Diane Feinstein now claims this allegation is significant, but she held the letter from Dr. Ford for months and didn’t share it with anyone on the committee. She now believes that because of a second baseless charge, the Thursday hearing should be delayed, but she never once brought the accusation to Judge Kavanaugh, either privately or in the public hearing. The Democrats leaked Dr Ford’s letter after the grandstanding and rudeness plan during the hearing failed. It didn’t matter that Dr. Ford hoped to remain anonymous.
Truth and respect are pillars of civilization the Democrats are not hesitant to push to the ground. Though the Republican led Senate Judiciary Committee, led by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), has bent over backward to accommodate Dr. Ford and give her a chance to speak, her attorney, Debra Katz complained, “Your cavalier treatment of a sexual assault survivor who has been doing her best to cooperate with the Committee is completely inappropriate.”
Just who is this Debra Katz? By her own words, she is part of the resistance against the 45th president. The Washington Post quotes her in a September 24, 2018 article, “This administration’s explicit agenda is to wage an assault on our most basic rights – from reproductive rights to our rights to fair pay,” she said last year in an interview with the National Women’s Law Center. We are determined to resist – fiercely and strategically.” Clearly, she is seeking an honest and fair hearing of these charges, right? The Democrats and the media do not care about truth or integrity. Decency was exchanged for pink hats in January of 2017.
We should not be mistaken. The Democrats seek to accomplish what President Obama dreamed of doing: fundamentally and radically changing the United States of America. This is a crucial time. We need the Republicans to hang together and hang tough. Kavanaugh must be confirmed. After that, we must defeat the Democrats in November. The character of the country we leave our kids is at stake.
