Landing this role changed this actresses life forever, but not in the way that usually happens in Hollywood.
Ashley Bratcher is starring in the movie Unplanned, a bio-pic which chronicles the story of Abby Johnson, a former clinic director for Planned Parenthood who defected from the organization and became a pro-life activist.
Abby Johnson has always been fiercely determined to help women in need. This desire is what led Abby to a career with Planned Parenthood, our nation’s largest abortion provider, and caused her to flee the organization, becoming an outspoken advocate for the pro-life movement.
During her eight years with Planned Parenthood, Abby quickly rose through the organization’s ranks and became a clinic director. However, Abby became increasingly disturbed by what she witnessed. Abortion was a product Planned Parenthood was selling, not an unfortunate necessity they were fighting to decrease. Still, Abby loved the women that entered her clinic and her co-workers. Despite a growing unrest within her, she stayed on and strove to serve women in crisis.
All of that changed on September 26, 2009 when Abby was asked to assist with an ultrasound-guided abortion. She watched in horror as a 13 week baby fought for, and ultimately lost, its life at the hand of the abortionist.
At that moment, she fully realized what abortion actually was and what she had dedicated her life to. As it washed over Abby, a dramatic transformation had occurred. Desperate and confused, Abby sought help from a local pro-life group. She swore that she would begin to advocate for life in the womb and expose abortion for what it truly is.
When Bratcher, an openly pro-life Christian actress, got the role, she was asked to immediately go to the set for 7 weeks of filming. In her rush to leave, she spoke to some family members but didn’t speak to her mom until the fourth day of filming. In an incredibly emotional phone call where her mother revealed that when she was pregnant with Ashley at age 19, she had nearly aborted her.
Ashley appeared on Fox and Friends and explains how she learned about the family secret.
BRATCHER: I knew she would be emotional hearing it just because she had shared with me when she was younger that she had had an abortion when she was 16. This movie is not about judgment or condemnation, but about mercy and forgiveness. I wanted to share with her Abby’s story and let her know what I was doing and who I was portraying. As I started to tell her, she just broke down completely and she said, ‘I need to tell you something that I’ve never told you before. When I was 19, I went to have an abortion with you. I was in the clinic on the table and the nurse was very pregnant and she came in to examine to me. I got really sick to my stomach and I knew I couldn’t do it. I got up and walked out and I chose you.’
Ashley then spoke with her father, who not only confirmed the story but added some more details that revealed how cheap human life is viewed by the anti-life crowd.
Watch Ashley recount her story:
‘I chose you.’
The action behind those three little words changed everything.
Unplanned will be released in 2019.

In ‘Raising Righteous and Rowdy Girls’, Doug Giles reinforces the notion that little women don’t need to be pampered by their fathers to turn out right. And having met his beautiful daughters, I know his philosophy works. As a strong-willed woman who thinks her daddy is the greatest guy in the world, I can tell you this is a must-read for every man who hopes to earn the same title. —-S.E.
