Is Facebook’s 10yr Challenge Meme A Gimmick To Train Their Facial Recognition AI?

Social media isn’t just a place for snarky memes and cat video, it’s home to plenty of fad ‘challenges’, too.
We remember back to the Ice Bucket Challenge, the cinnamon challenge, the Kiki challenge (getting out of your moving car and singing), and most recently, the Bird Box challenge which had morons doing everyday things blindfolded.
With almost depressing predictably, those last two led to, you guessed it, car crashes.
But a Facebook photo challenge is harmless, isn’t it? You might think so. But remember the reason so many of us left that platform is because, in Zuckworld, the user IS the product.
Skepticism led one Wired contributor — Kate O’Neill — to ask the question:
Me 10 years ago: probably would have played along with the profile picture aging meme going around on Facebook and Instagram
Me now: ponders how all this data could be mined to train facial recognition algorithms on age progression and age recognition— Kate O'Neill (@kateo) January 12, 2019
Ouch. Here’s what she has to say about it.
Is she overreacting? Or is she onto something?
While reading up on this story I noticed how not everyone plays by the accepted rules, and some people are even having some fun with it. ClashDaily doesn’t support FB ever since news sites like ours got ‘Zucked‘ (Our response, if you missed it, is here: Facebook BANS Doug Giles And ClashDaily.com – Here’s Doug’s Response)
But we did take a look at what Twitter is doing with it. (Twitter is *marginally* better among the big-name Tech sites.)
Some laughed at how mostly just our tech changed:

Some were more snarky…

Curried goat? Yes, please. It’s cute AND yummy!
Or about movie casting choices:

You know… they’ve got a point.

But this one has got to the be the winner:
(oops. That page no longer exists. Here’s one like it. This time we’ll use a screenshot so the link doesn’t get broken.)
Who did this?
(You cheeky bastard, you.)
Even yours truly got in on the fun, well — in my own way.
Ten Year Challenge, #Venezuela — Health care edition?
Ok, the photos are actually 2012 and 2016, but … close enough.
