One guy ‘believed the victim’, only to learn afterward that he’s killed an innocent man.
It’s easy to talk tough. If we all had a nickel for each time someone claimed that they would put anyone who hurts their [daughter, sister, wife, mother etc.] into the morgue or at least the hospital, millionaires would be a dime a dozen.
It isn’t often we are put in a situation where those convictions of ours are challenged.
The seventeen-year-old brother of a sixteen-year-old girl found himself in exactly that situation. When he was told his sister had been violated by a 62-year-old man on the bus, he went looking for blood.
He found Michael Fife stepping off the bus and attacked him.
The brother ran towards Mr. Fife and assaulted him. Mr. Fife fell to the sidewalk and suffered head injuries. Mr. Fife was left unconscious, lying on the sidewalk, while his assailant fled the scene on foot.”
“Kind of a linebacker-type charge toward the gentleman, knocking him down,” recalled Logan Department Chief Gary Jensen, according to Fox13Now. “This is an absolutely horrible event.”
The press release continued: “At 6:15 pm the 16-year-old female called police to report the sexual assault on the bus. Logan Police detectives reviewed the video footage of the alleged sexual assault. The video showed Mr. Fife walking past the girl, but no sexual assault occurred.”

It. Never. Happened.
And now a man is dead.
Over a lie.
There is a reason we have a criminal justice system, where the presumption of innocence protects us until we are FOUND to be guilty.
(In the wider application, think about Kavanaugh, or how the Democrats have been reacting to Trump/Russia allegations, and how if WE want that same presumption of innocence if someone wrongly implicates our loved ones, we must insist that it be applied to everyone equally.)
But this goes back to the girl who pointed the finger. She’s a minor. We will never know her name.
But now she has to carry the horrible burden of having maliciously triggered a chain of events that ended an innocent man’s life. Forever.
She has to carry the burden of knowing she’s ruined her brother’s future.
Over a lie. And for what?
Malice is a dangerous toy to play with.
Don’t be like her.
