WINNING: Trump’s Tariff Policy Is Already Paying Dividends In Mexico

People mocked Trump when he played the tariff card with respect to dealing with illegal immigration over the Southern border.

There were all kinds of negative reactions.

Some were rooted purely in economic policy — that it would do more harm to our own economy than it would to help solve the border issue. Others just dismissed him as a raving idiot.

Our own assessment was that Trump was applying leverage — giving Mexico motivation to really care about whether this problem was solved or not.

People will object to the tariffs for economic reasons. But this is not an economic decision in the traditional sense. This is a punitive action for a country that has no respect our borders or laws.

If they do not see us as a friend and ally; if they are aiding and abetting organized crime to dump billions of dollars worth of problems and obligations in our lap, Trump needs to find a way to make them care more about what they lose by turning a blind eye to this problem then they gain by turning a blind eye to it. — ClashDaily, May 31

Not to say ‘I told you so’, but…

Actually, yeah, that’s EXACTLY what we’re doing. It looks like we called it correctly.

Even the NYTimes is saying so:

Mexico and the United States are discussing significant changes in asylum rules and border enforcement that could forestall President Trump from imposing tariffs on all Mexican imports, senior officials from both countries said Thursday.

The changes under consideration would give the United States a greater ability to reject requests for entry from migrant families fleeing violence in Central America, according to those officials. Under the new arrangement, migrants would be required to seek asylum in the first foreign country they enter after leaving their homes.

Guatemalans looking for refuge would have to apply for asylum in Mexico rather than the United States. And those fleeing El Salvador and Honduras would have to seek asylum in Guatemala rather than continuing on to Mexico or the United States.

And what exactly is Mexico doing to show they’re taking Trump seriously? According to WaPo, no friend of the Trump Administration:

Faced with Trump’s threat to impose steadily rising tariffs on goods imported from Mexico beginning Monday, Mexican officials have pledged to deploy up to 6,000 national guard troops to the area of the country’s border with Guatemala, a show of force they say will immediately reduce the number of Central Americans heading north toward the U.S. border.

It’s that awkward moment when Mexico is taking American sovereignty and security more seriously than leading Democrats are.

Foreigners are more committed to solving the immigration crisis than Pelosi, Schumer, AOC and company.

But we all KNOW why that is, right? For one thing, it’s to directly attack and undercut Trump’s key electoral promise of securing the border.

And for another — their own political self-interest. In their own words:

A memo co-authored by former Clinton communications director Jennifer Palmieri, obtained by The Daily Caller, admits the Democratic Party needs to protect illegal immigrants brought here by DACA in order to ensure those additional votes.

The Center for American Progress (CAP) Action Fund memo, which circulated Monday, called on Democrats to “refuse to offer any votes for Republican spending bills that do not offer a fix for Dreamers and instead appropriate funds to deport them.”

The memo from the left-leaning think tank also said that protecting DACA is not only a “moral imperative” but also a “critical component” in winning elections.

“The fight to protect Dreamers is not only a moral imperative, it is also a critical component of the Democratic Party’s future electoral success,” the memo read.

It finished, “If Democrats don’t try to do everything in their power to defend Dreamers, that will jeopardize Democrats’ electoral chances in 2018 and beyond.”

Sorry Democrats, looks like the President just played his Trump card.

Hey Patriots — are you tired of winning yet?
