When the dirty deeds criminals usually practice in secret are brazenly done in public, with witnesses watching, that’s an indictment of the city itself.
Chicago takes a lot of flack for the crime it is known for, but that’s the example that’s pointed to partly because of its massive size. Other cities with the same problem but fewer victims are no less tragic for those who have to suffer from it.
In this case, a victim was surrounded by people who could have stepped in, or could have cried out. Or hit the emergency call button on the train.
Instead, the bystanders chose to do … nothing.
They didn’t so much as call 9-1-1.
Sounds like it’s time the ‘City of Brotherly love’ is due for a name change.
A 35-year-old man in Pennsylvania is facing rape and assault charges after a woman was sexually assaulted on board a public transit train Wednesday night as riders witnessed the attack but did not intervene, authorities said on Friday.
The woman was assaulted at around 11 p.m. while riding the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) Market-Frankford line towards the town of Upper Darby.
“The assault was observed by a SEPTA employee, who called 911, enabling SEPTA officers to respond immediately and apprehend the suspect in the act,” Andrew Busch, a SEPTA spokesperson, said in a statement.
SEPTA officers arrested the man, later identified as 35-year-old Fiston Ngoy, according to Upper Darby Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt. —NBC
That same video showed other riders present but doing nothing to intervene on the woman’s behalf. That poor woman could really have benefitted from a couple of really pissed-off ‘toxically masculine’ guys coming to her rescue and kicking her assaulter’s teeth out through the back of his head.
Shameful.
But not unexpected in a world of people that’s increasingly so ‘connected’ that it’s come at a cost of our own basic human relations with people in the actual real world.
