It’s never a good thing when you find an abandoned child left to fend for himself or herself. It’s worse when there are two or three. But to find them living in squalor with a long-dead child’s corpse? Nothing could possibly prepare someone for that.
A nine-year-old found dead inside a southwest Harris County apartment may have been dead up to a year, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Imagine the shock a neighbor must feel waking up to a news report that this tragedy was playing out for a year or more just down the hall, or on the next floor above or below you.
The abandoned children are ages 15, 10, and 7 — and investigators believe the oldest child cared for the other two, the report said.
The remains are believed to belong to another minor — possibly a sibling of one of the children, authorities said.

The oldest of the children was left to care for the younger ones, possibly for long stretches at a time.
Late Sunday night, the sheriff’s office said the mother of the children and her boyfriend had been found and were being interviewed by law enforcement.
The children showed signs of malnourishment and were taken to the hospital to be treated.
…The 9-year-old’s remains were reportedly out in the apartment, not concealed or hidden.
“[We’re] Connecting all the dots at this point, it appears [the kids] were in there while the body was deteriorating,” Gonzalez said. — ABC
State officials have taken custody of the children.
