We’ve been hard on the Pope when he’s given ground to China, the woke or suffered the introduction of pagan customs, but when he’s right, he’s right.
And Pope Francis just let the secular colonialists in the the EU have it with both barrels after a leaked 30-page document from the EU’s ‘Equality Commissioner’ actively pushing an erasure of the very faith upon which Europe’s historical and cultural uniqueness was built.
To that end, the 30-page document, released by the EU equality commissioner, Helena Dalli, in late October, advised staff, “Not everyone celebrates the Christian holidays, and not all Christians celebrate them on the same dates.” Instead of saying, “Christmas time,” it instead recommended saying, “Holiday times.” — DailyWire
Surprisingly the Pope didn’t just push back on the secular railroading of Christianity, he did so by invoking the one kind of moral language even secularists still acknowledge… by invoking both the founding fathers and the spectre of tyrannies past. Think Napoleon. Stalin. Hitler.
(Note: as the Pope was speaking about actions in the EU, the founding fathers he was referring to were a very different set than the ones you and I might have in mind. One name of the eleven you are certain to be familiar with is Churchill. The rest of the list is found here.)
Perhaps without realizing it, he is also making a strong argument for Federalism in these comments.
You refer to the European Union document on Christmas… this is an anachronism. In history many, many dictatorships have tried to do so. Think of Napoleon: from there… Think of the Nazi dictatorship, the communist one… it is a fashion of a watered-down secularism, distilled water… But this is something that throughout hasn’t worked.
But this makes me think of something, talking about the European Union, which I believe is necessary: the European Union must take in hand the ideals of the founding fathers, which were ideals of unity, of greatness, and be careful not to take the path of ideological colonisation. This could end up dividing the countries and [causing] the European Union to fail. The European Union must respect each country as it is structured within, the variety of countries, and not want to make them uniform. I don’t think it will do that, it wasn’t its intention, but be careful, because sometimes they come, and they throw projects like this one out there and they don’t know what to do; I don’t know what comes to mind… No, each country has its own peculiarity, but each country is open to the others. The European Union: its sovereignty, the sovereignty of brothers in a unity that respects the individuality of each country. And be careful not to be vehicles of ideological colonisation. That is why [the issue] of Christmas is an anachronism. —VaticanNews
It’s nice to see the Pope calling out the Secularists for their aggressive attempts of cultural colonization.
There’s even an outside chance that Biden and Pelosi will actually listen. It’s a longshot but they do try really hard to suck up to him.
If the Pope comes to consider the exact same federalist principles and weigh their implications in the American context, maybe he will start respecting the sovereignty and internal structures of the variety of American states and stop telling America what political policies these individual states ‘must’ adopt to conform to his private opinions.
But full credit to him for calling out secular totalitarian colonialists… especially when such people are on the rise.
Just look at how casually the left will pour contempt on expressions of faith, even in contexts they are Constitutionally forbidden to do so … for example, ‘the dogma lives loudly within you’, or Bernie Sanders challenging the religious views of a nominee.
The party that booed God have become over-run by openly anti-religious secular bigots.
Trump championed religious freedom, and Biden has refused to pick up that mantle.
