What is it with stars singing the anthem in a weird way at the NBA All-Star Game?
It seems like celebrities desperately want to put their stamp on “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
Why do they feel the need to do that? Just sing the song, people!
The past few years have been a rollercoaster for anthem performances.
Last year, Gladys Knight sang the anthem before the All-Star Game and did a helluva job.

Andrew Hamilton put his own spin on the anthem at the All-Star Game in 2019, and it wasn’t completely awful.
2020’s anthem was sung by Chaka Khan and it was… a long, drawn-out, and extremely painful experience.

It wasn’t much different with Macy Gray’s performance, except that it was mercifully much shorter and a lot less shrill.
On February 20, Gray, 54, performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the 2022 NBA All-Star Game, which featured LeBron James’ team against Kevin Durant’s team.
However, while Gray was in the midst of singing, James, 37, was caught giggling. And now, multiple snippets of the basketball player doing this have been shared on social media.

Comedian Bill Murray, 71, was also spotted in the crowd with an expression that was just so… Bill Murray.

Gray says that she was “nervous” about singing the anthem.
Maybe, but it’s a bit uncomfortable to watch because she looks like she’s completely strung out.

That wasn’t great, but it still can’t compare to the anthem at the 2018 NBA All-Star Game.
That is a piece of Americana that we will all cherish.

Maybe we should just invite some Canadian hockey fans to come up and sing the “Star-Spangled Banner” — that seems to work out just fine without any weird flourishes.
