This is a very strange connection to make.

Video of a Hudson, Ohio City Council meeting held on Tuesday is going viral after Mayor Craig Shubert made the bizarre suggestion that allowing ice fishing on a local lake could lead to prostitution.

Because surely, when you’re sitting on a frozen lake waiting for the fish to bite, clearly you’re thinking, “Gee, too bad there isn’t a brothel nearby.”

While that’s a bit by comedian Charlie Berens, the discussion was not a joke.

Shubert made the comments, which have been widely shared online, during a Hudson City Council meeting on Tuesday. Council President Chris Foster said “a number of residents” have requested permission to ice fish on Hudson Springs Lake, according to a recording of the meeting posted on the city’s website. Ice fishing is currently prohibited on the lake.

Several officials demurred. They worried someone could fall through the ice, and the city could be held liable. It could also create an additional burden for Hudson’s firefighters, paramedics and police officers.

Shubert raised an altogether different concern.

“If you open this up to ice fishing, while on the surface it sounds good, then what happens next year?” Shubert asked. “Does someone come back and say ‘I want an ice shanty on Hudson Springs Park, for X amount of time?’ And then if you then allow ice fishing with shanties, then that leads to another problem: prostitution. And now you’ve got the police chief and the police department involved.”

Council members did not directly address Shubert’s comment about prostitution. Council member Chris Banweg responded by quipping “I’m not in favor of ice shanties.”

Here’s the clip from the council meeting.

Pardon me for being crude, but isn’t it a bit… cold for an activity of that sort outdoors on a frozen lake?

If the idea that an ice fishing shanty could lead to prostitution, couldn’t the same be said about any non-permanent structure like… tents?

Is Mayor Shubert against camping for the same reason? Wouldn’t prostitution be more likely to occur in tents because they’re not put up in the middle of a lake at a time when you have to be concerned with things like thin ice and frostbite?

Ice fishing to prostitution is quite the leap.

You may recall that back in September, Mayor Craig Shubert had called on the entire school board to resign over age-inappropriate creative writing prompts given to high school students. Several of the prompts were about sex, one instructed students to drink a beer then describe the taste, while others were dark dealing with suicide, murder, and drug addiction — perhaps not the best choices for high school students.

Mayor Demands All School Board Members RESIGN Or Be CHARGED After Outrage Over Course Material

Mayor Shubert was lambasted for calling it “child pornography” and faced a ton of backlash from the people that seem hellbent on introducing sexualized content into the curriculum without notifying parents.

While the Republican mayor was right that the writing prompts were not age-appropriate, he’s clearly off base with the possible connection between ice fishing and prostitution.

It’s important to call balls and strikes, and this was definitely a bizarre reach by Mayor Shubert.
