Huh. It looks like a lot of voters agree with that Bad Orange Man who said, “Fake News is the Enemy of the People.” Imagine that.

A New York Times/Siena poll released on Tuesday revealed that the majority of registered voters (60%) believe that “the mainstream media” is a “threat” to democracy on some level.

The poll details released Tuesday showed that a whopping 71% of the 792 registered voters questioned say “American democracy is currently under threat.”
Among those who fear for democracy, 84% of them, or roughly 60% of all registered voters, view “mainstream media” as some sort of threat. A majority, 59%, call the media a “major threat to democracy” while an additional 25% call it a “minor threat to democracy.” Only 15% who say democracy is under threat do not blame the media.
Registered voters are even united against the media despite their party affiliation. 95% of Republicans, 83% of Independents and even 70% of Democrats who believe democracy is under threat say the media is some sort of threat. However, while 80% of those Republicans and 53% of those Independents call the media a “major” threat, just 38% of those Democrats feel the same.

Distrust in media crossed party lines and that of the likely voters who say that “democracy is under threat”, the media came out ahead of Donald Trump, Joe Biden, Republicans, Democrats, the Supreme Court, the Electoral College, voting by mail, and voting machines.

Here are a couple of screenshots from the poll:

Naturally, this news came as a surprise to the New York Times which had conducted the poll with Siena College.

The Grey Lady had made it clear during the Trump administration that they would politicize their reporting in order to hurt the Bad Orange Man that had somehow become President.

A NYTimes leaked staff meeting in 2019 made it pretty clear that the reporting was going to be favorable to Biden and unfavorable to Trump during the 2020 election cycle.

Currently, the NYT is very busy making sure that the headlines are all about how the Supreme Court, the Electoral College, and Republicans — especially those of the “MAGA” variety — are a hair’s breadth away from ending American democracy as we know it and ushering in a new era of fascism whose core tenets appear to be… *checks notes*… individual liberty, upholding federalism, a secure southern border, parental rights in education, and not being mandated by the government to take an mRNA vaccine that hadn’t even been tested for what it was advertised to do ie. stop the transmission of the novel coronavirus.

That must sound positively hellish to the Left.

Nate Cohn who writes the New York Times Subscriber Newsletter, “The Tilt”, clearly couldn’t hide his shock that the unwashed masses don’t see the threats to American democracy as he and his colleagues do.

When we started our national poll on democracy last week, David Leonhardt’s recent New York Times front-page story on threats to democracy was at the top of my mind. His article focused on two major issues: the election denial movement in the Republican Party, and undemocratic elements of American elected government like the Electoral College, gerrymandering and the Senate.
But when we got the results of our Times/Siena poll late last week, it quickly became clear these were not the threats on the minds of voters.
While 71 percent of registered voters agreed that democracy was “under threat,” only about 17 percent of voters described the threat in a way that squares with discussion in mainstream media and among experts — with a focus on Republicans, Donald J. Trump, political violence, election denial, authoritarianism, and so on.
Instead, most people described the threat to democracy in terms that would be very unfamiliar to someone concerned about election subversion or the Jan. 6 insurrection — and I’m not just talking about stop-the-steal adherents who think the last election already brought American democracy to an end.
The poll results help make sense of how so many voters can say democracy is under threat, and yet rank “threats to democracy” low on the list of challenges facing the country.

Did you catch his snide comment about the “election deniers” who don’t care about the January 6 “iNsUrReCtIoN” more than inflation and the economy?

Maybe Cohn doesn’t give a rip about rising costs because he’s insulated from it.

Some of us don’t have that luxury, Nate.

Most people are concerned about the rising costs of living, their 401K, and if they’re going to be laid off in this “booming” Biden economy that is currently not in recession because everyone just suddenly agreed to redefine recession as not necessarily two consecutive quarters of negative growth just ahead of the midterms. How convenient.

Could that possibly have some bearing on how the “mainstream media” is viewed by the public?

And as for “election denialism”… well, that’s been going on for more than two decades now, but “the media” didn’t see it as a problem until 2020.

Perhaps Nate should attend the next Kari Lake presser and learn how journalists are supposed to report the news.

The poll had some other interesting tidbits that go against the Regime Media narratives.

There is a bipartisan belief that government doesn’t work to the benefit of ordinary people, but powerful elites.

Independents polled lean more toward the GOP than the Dems.

While we’re told by the “progressive” Left that we all need to be on the “right side” of history, it seems that the majority of people lean more moderate to conservative.

While the country is clearly quite divided, the majority of people polled don’t believe that other people’s political views can tell you if an individual is a “good person.”

Some of the findings were quite consistent with other polls. For example, on a generic ballot question, the GOP took the lead by 4 points.

And Biden’s approval is still hiding in the basement as he did in 2020.

One of the most damning things in the poll is that nearly half of those likely voters say that the nation is too divided to solve the nation’s problems.

This division is stoked by the Regime Media which appears to be more concerned with getting its preferred party in power by suppressing stories, editorializing the news, and using slanted reporting that treats voters like they’re stupid and incapable of thinking things through when they’re just given the facts.

The New York Times should take some time to self-reflect after this poll, but that would require a modicum of humility, and it’s pretty clear that they don’t have that.
