Maybe you thought our military had a monopoly on the whole ’embrace the suck’ approach to hardship. Nope. The apostles had them beat by, oh, about 2000 years.
If someone told us he wanted to stand on the Olympic medal podium while hearing his national anthem played but he didn’t want to train long hours or eat a restrictive diet, the world would laugh in his face.
Because everyone knows that the only way to climb to that level of excellence is to bend your own body to your will and go through things you thought were beyond your endurance. Your success is by no means guaranteed, but that kind of struggle is the basic price of admission to even show up and compete.
But when a believer tells you he wants to live a life of Christian service, but he doesn’t believe a Good God would ever let His beloved disciples break a sweat, let alone a nail… where are those same people that would laugh in the face of the couch-potato triathlete?
If the harvest is going to be any good to the farmer, it needs to be threshed to separate the wheat from the chaff.
If the ore is going to be any good to the jeweler, it needs to be refined in the furnace to drain away the dross.
And if the disciple is going to be any good to Christ? Well, that’s what this week’s message is all about, isn’t it?
