Mike Pompeo is on a book tour that many pundits suspect is actually the pre-launch to a run for the Republican Presidential nomination. In one of those interviews, the Biden administration was SAVAGED.
Unlike so many of other interviews he’ll do, the Ruthless Variety Progrum is an audio-only podcast. But with a Conservative audience like that one — not to mention its colorful hosts — it’s a stop he couldn’t miss.
(‘Progrum’, by the way, is not a spelling mistake, it’s the correct pronunciation. Just ask the show’s Minions, they’ll tell you.)
As the name would suggest, the show is more than just political interviews, it covers a variety of topics and fun stuff. But it will usually have an interview, usually with someone significant on the political right… sometimes an up-and-comer, sometimes a known entity. In the case of Mike Pompeo, it is both.
They talked for maybe 30 minutes or so, talking about his book, his time as CIA Director and some stories about being Secretary of State.
The conversation, naturally, turned to China. And that’s when Pompeo dropped a truth bomb on the Biden administration.
One of the hosts (Comfortably Smug) mentioned a conversation he had with an unnamed member of Congress, asking why he wasn’t more hard on China and Iran. His answer was ‘you think I want to sleep on a military base like Mike Pompeo has to with his wife.’ Is that a true story to begin with? It was a true story, and is the bigger point Mike mentions in his response.
The various topics they had discussed around this part of the interview transitioned smoothly from scaring the hell out of our enemies by droning Solemani, to living on base (yes, mostly for security reasons) while Secretary of State, to being sanctioned by China almost the minute he left office. The ‘why’ of his being sanctioned is importatant, and we will quote it directly.
But your bigger point is a really good one. So I was sanctioned by China, on January 20th, just about five minutes after I left office. Why’d they sanction me? It doesn’t change my life.
They were sending a message to secretary Blinken. To members of Congress. And to Jake Sullivan. All of whom, by the way, Blinken, Sullivan… all made their living connecting Chinese companies to America. This is how they put food on their table. They are sending a message to those folks: behave like Pompeo and you won’t be able to go back to that after your time in service. So it is not an accident that you hear some member of Congress say those things, it is exactly the response that the bad actors are looking for and it is precisely the response that our leaders can never give them.
