Democrats hunt high and low looking for any excuse to call conservatives ‘bigots’, meanwhile their own party is teeming with them.
One of their more prominent members just got her knuckles rapped for being a little TOO obvious about the left’s overt hostility to Israel.
Republicans could point to the Freedom Caucus as some kind of flagbearer for a version of conservatism that chooses the path of holding an unflinching commitment to a set of political and economic principles instead of the ‘squish’ or ‘RINO’ approach of horse-trading for the ‘art of the possible’.
The Democrats have a Bizzaro World evil twin of the Freedom Caucus on their far left flank in the Congressional Progressive Caucus. That’s where you’ll find AOC and her Squad of misfits and malcontents.
Leading that caucus is one Pramila Jayapal, who has found herself in the center of a controversy involving Israel. With various members of ‘The Squad’ having pushed all their chips in on their antagonism to Israel, it is only right that their Leader should share their views.
Unfortunately for Democrats, those views were shared a little TOO freely. It was bad enough that the same party that refused to call out Ilhan Omar (or any other Democrats) for obviously antisemitic statements couldn’t turn a blind eye to this one.
The first domino in this chain can be traced back to far-left opposition to an upcoming visit by (ironically, left-wing) Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who will soon be addressing Congress.
Act I — Public Pandering
The drama began with Jayapal’s public statement at an annual activist conference in Chicago called ‘Netroots Nation’ in which (surprise, surprise) activists disrupted the session. In this instance, the activists were Palestinian.
Jayapal addressed the audience in words that got picked up and noticed internationally:
“As somebody who’s been in the streets and participated in a lot of demonstrations, I want you to know that we have been fighting to make it clear that Israel is a racist state, that the Palestinian people deserve self-determination and autonomy, that the dream of a two-state solution is slipping away from us, that it does not even feel possible,” Jayapal said to a mixture of applause and chants of “free Palestine.” — Haaretz
You will notice that citation is Haaretz news, published in Israel.
So, the statement was noticed by the very people being denounced as racists.
There are any number of responses one could make to debunk that claim and various related ‘apartheid’ claims. Others have made those arguments more eloquently than we could here.
Instead, we will turn our attention to the panic that erupted when Democrats realized they had just insulted one of their own more dependable voting blocks… to say nothing of reliable income streams.
Act II — Democrat Damage Control
“Israel is not a racist state,” House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark, Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar and Vice Chair Ted Lieu said in a statement that did not mention the progressive leader by name.
A draft statement signed by a handful of other House Democrats and circulating among lawmakers’ offices on Sunday expresses “deep concern” over what it calls Jayapal’s “unacceptable” comments, adding, “We will never allow anti-Zionist voices that embolden antisemitism to hijack the Democratic Party and country.”
Their pushback comes ahead of Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s address to a joint meeting of Congress later this week, which some progressives have said they’ll skip, citing concerns about human rights. House progressives have been vocal about their opposition to Israeli settlements in the West Bank and the US sponsorship of Israel’s Iron Dome defense system. — CNN
Act III — The Obligatory Non-Apology Apology
It’s the classic example of a liberal apology in which you stand by every vile thing that was said in the first place, with the exception that you frame it in a way that only levels those dehumanizing insults at targets deemed socially (or in this case, politically) ‘acceptable’.
Jayapal later walked back her remarks in a statement Sunday, saying she was trying to “defuse a tense situation” at the conference and offered “my apologies to those who I have hurt with my words.”
“Words do matter and so it is important that I clarify my statement,” Jayapal said. “I do not believe the idea of Israel as a nation is racist.”
“I do, however, believe that [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu’s extreme right-wing government has engaged in discriminatory and outright racist policies and that there are extreme racists driving that policy within the leadership of the current government,” she added. — NBC
Epilogue — She just brought Biden into it
There is an unintended consequence with Jayapal using a such a low-effort and greasy tactic to have her cake and eat it too, appeasing the activists while indicating to left wing Jewish people that she doesn’t mean them… they are the ‘good ones’.
It invokes exactly the same language Joe Biden has and reminds the world why it is that the (left-wing) Israeli President Isaac Herzog will be addressing Congress, while the actual elected head of state, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is unwelcome at the Biden White House.
Joe Biden can hide behind the excuse he has for years that Netanyahu is ‘too extreme’. But he runs a coalition government which — by definition — CANNOT be ‘extreme’.
It was Bibi’s government that made peace with several Arab neighbors in Trump’s crowning foreign-policy achievement, the Abraham Accords.
Netanyahu’s government accepted a deal in principle for a two-state solution for enduring peace with Palestinians. It was a deal that was recognized by some of Israel’s neighbors as a fair ‘maximalist’ starting position in good-faith negotiations. But Palestinians rejected it entirely.
Also, the Palestinians Joe (and more importantly his cadre of Obama holdovers) have sided with have a policy of paying a pension for families of ‘martyrs’ who are killed, or injured during an attempt at killing Jewish citizens.
It’s the latest in a long line of data points that people like Mark Levin have been bringing against Joe Biden in claiming that Joe Biden AND his Democrat party are, in their heart of hearts, deeply antisemitic.
