Are we in Bizarro World? The shock isn’t just that a CNN host is actually doing her job, but that she’s doing it so spectacularly.

Kudos to host Abby Phillip for 8 minutes of must-see TV on CNN of all places!

The exchange between Abby Phillip who was hosting CNN Primetime and Chicago Teachers’ Union President Stacy Davis Gates is the stuff of legend.

Phillip absolutely blasted Davis Gates for her hypocrisy in denouncing private schools as “racist” when she currently sends her own son to a private school.

Alex Christy at the Media Research Center opened his article this way:

It was a shocking, but welcome, development when CNN Primetime host Abby Phillip welcomed Chicago Teachers Union President Stacy Davis Gates to the Tuesday show and repeatedly called her out for her hypocrisy of sending her son to a private school for its sports program.
Phillip immediately began by confronting Gates with her double standard, “You’ve likened in the past private schools of today to quote “segregation academies” of the Jim Crow South. Why then send your child to a private school after speaking out so publicly against them?”

It certainly is a “shocking but welcome development” to see someone on CNN actually call out a leftist on-air — and a teachers’ union boss, no less!

Phillips wouldn’t let Davis Gates pull the race card on her watch. She also explained to her — rather politely — that Davis Gates’ position denies other parents the choice that she is exerting with her own child.

Watch this 8 minutes of pure gold.

Here’s the transcript of the verbal bodyslam that Phillips gave Davis Gates.

PHILLIP: I totally understand the point that you’re making, but I do wonder, do you regret your own rhetoric here?

GATES: Regret rhetoric? What I’ve said are facts again I’m a history teacher –

PHILLIP: Well, I think that the rhetoric that I’m — let me explain my question, let me just explain.

GATES: Hold on for a second, Abby, I understand quite clearly what you’re saying –

PHILLIP: What I’m asking is that you’re describing a very nuanced issue here. I understand that, I understand the history of, you know, segregation in the school system. But at the same time, what I’m trying to ask you is, do you think that your rhetoric at some point went too far when you are making a choice, because perhaps I assume you can afford to do that, that a lot of Chicago parents don’t, because they can’t afford it. And proponents of school choice say the state should have a role in helping those families who can’t afford it make the same choice that you did for your family.

She deserved it.

Davis Gates even admits that many of her neighbors don’t send their kids to the local school because they, too, can choose.

And yet she defends denying that choice to other families that are unable to make it for financial reasons.

School choice is the Civil Rights issue of our day and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Good on Abby Phillip for calling out the hierarchy that Stacy Davis Gates and her ilk continue to perpetuate.

It kinda makes you wonder if there’s a sea change over at CNN after all…

Indeed.
