Courageous Journo Addresses Congress About Need For Laws Protecting Press Freedom
Not all heroes wear capes
Catherine Herridge is one of the few honest journalists left in the business. She had the chops to be hired by a mainstream network, but the integrity to stand by her convictions… even when it cost her everything.
She was rewarded for her integrity (or possibly for being a little too honest with her criticism of the party in power) by losing her job in February.
But her story went a lot further than that. Her network (CBS) seized all of her records and files, including everything relating to the files, contacts, and sources she had cultivated over the years. It was only after CBS was publicly shamed for this outrage breech of protocol and precedent that they returned all of her information.
It is unclear whether we know for sure if the contents of any of those files were violated while they were not under her control. On top of her firing, she was involved in a court case as a witness.
When a judge compelled her to give up the source of her story or else face withering penalties in the order of $800/day, she stood her ground and is appealing the case. (We hope her appeal includes a reference to the 8th Amendment where the topic of ‘excessive fines’ are specifically mentioned.)
Congress is preparing to draft new legislation to protect journalists from being ordered to betray their sources in any but a few specific permissible situations involving terrorism or defamation.
Herridge just stood before Congress and made a tremendous case explaining why press freedoms are so very important. (And it’s really interesting that it’s the much-maligned Fox News, NOTº CBS, that’s taking to her defence in this fight.)
Everyone who has spend the last few years acting like it’s the government’s job to police every instance of ‘misinformtion and disinformation’ ought to listen to her passionate defense of the REAL role of journalism in society.
