Did you ever know someone in a perpetual state of rage? Someone whose hair-trigger temper left everyone walking on eggshells?
If we all know Jesus wasn’t like that, why do we tolerate it in our own lives? Even when Jesus was braiding a whip, or publicly humiliating the Pharisees and their buddies, it wasn’t driven by malice. His target was wickedness and corruption, not personal vendettas against annoying people.
Jesus wasn’t the kind of guy who would pop off on a waiter who forgot to hold the pickle on his pastrami on rye.
So, just how big a deal is it for a Christian with what we like to pretty up with harmless descriptions like ‘anger issues’? It’s the kind of thing that –left unchecked — can make a believer crash and burn.
If that’s not rough enough, the gossips and slanderers who want to tell the world about it will want to hear what this text says about them, too… and which sins make the same lists.
It ain’t pretty. But then again, neither was being stripped, flogged, and crucified for sins Jesus never committed. If our sins were a big enough deal that HE paid that kind of a price for them, maybe we should take the hint and treat them seriously too.
