The Great One: Trump’s Buddy Pure Class When Ovechkin Overtakes Record

For the Record, the Overall scoring record is STILL Wayne Gretzky's

Apart from a few snarky fans upset about tariffs, NHL hockey embodies the things we like best about team sports.

The grit and toughness we see with hard hits and hockey fights is balanced by team handshakes at the end of a series and a trophy for the league’s most sportsmanlike player.

The best of the sport strive to make their mark, showing respect to the men whose records they overtake, and grace when the day comes that theirs, in turn are overtaken.

Trump War room retweeted Kash Patel’s nod to a great moment in hockey history, when Alex Ovechkin overtakes Wayne Gretzky for the overall record for goals scored.

Gretzky made a point of being part of Ovechkin’s big day, showing up to be present for each game as the day drew near. It was part of paying it forward, as he explained not long before the big day arrived.

“The integrity of the game. Gordie Howe was here when I broke his record”. So naturally he agreed to do the same when Alex got close to breaking his. Part of why they call him The Great One is how he has been an ambassador for the game.

That professional respect was returned by Ovechkin shortly thereafter. When his team had the lead and the opposition pulled their goalie in the final minutes of the game, Ovechkin remained on the bench for as long as the opposition net was empty.

On principle, he did not want to break Gretzky’s record with an unearned goal shot into an empty net. That too, was classy and shows a respect for the game and the fans who love it. For a cherry on top, Wayne was wearing a Gordie Howe pin at the time, and Mrs. Gretzky gave a gift to Mrs. Ovechkin, just as Mrs. Howe had done before him.

As for the goal itself? History in the making right here. With an absolute bomb scored from the point on the power play:

With this kind of respect for the game is it any wonder Trump has so much respect for Gretzky? And if anyone’s wondering whether Gretzky’s overall scoring title is in any real danger…? It’s not.

Here is a screenshot of Ovechkin’s totals so far (looks like that last goal hadn’t been factored in on the stat sheet quite yet):

Games played // Goals // Assists // Total Points

And here’s a look at the Great One’s stats:

They’ve played almost exactly the same number of games, Ovechkin just took a lead on goals… and now Alex has only 1239 more assists before he catches Gretzky there too.

How hard could it possibly be?

As for those cranky Canadian fans who booed the anthem? Let’s put that in perspective. When their government-controlled media isn’t telling them scary stories about Orange Man Bad, here’s what they REALLY think of America’s Anthem.
