It’s the same thing JD Vance rattled chains over when he addressed the Munich Security conference when he asked what, exactly, we think we are defending as we ‘defend democracy’… if not the freedoms the West has long since taken for granted… including speech.
Pressing this shift in priorities with our allies has been moving the needle in ways that will matter to ordinary Americans even here at home.

Governments are already far too intrusive, and routinely blow through safeguards designed to keep citizens protected from tyrannical excesses in the use of ever-more intrusive powers.
This keeps at least one additional layer of protection in place for those all-too-willing to decide the laws limiting the powers of bureaucrats with sweeping powers don’t apply to them.
