Hating Your Brother – What Saith The Scripture?

John may be remebered as ‘the Beloved’, but when he sees the Church that Christ bled and died to save from the Wrath of God under assault, the Apostle of Love is coming in hot.
Just like you expect a ‘son of Thunder’ would when something he loves is under threat.
Last week, in Chapter One of John’s first epistle, we went into the threats the Church faces from external threats and Christ-less theology. This week, we’re looking at the folks in the pews.
He’s not playing small-ball here, either. He’s asking the questions you won’t hear most modern preachers touch with a ten-foot-pew.
You know, the kind that might make their biggest donors walk out the door forever: “are you a Christian? No really — ARE ya? Or are you just playing one on TV?
Do you love your brother? Don’t answer too quickly, you might be admitting you don’t really understand the depth of the question.
What about holding a grudge? Doesn’t ‘everyone’ do it? Is it such a big deal to God if you do or don’t?
Spoiler alert: it IS a ‘big deal’. In fact, John is drawing a pretty clear line between your attitude toward your brother and whether there is any ‘there’ there in the walk you claim to have with Christ.
Is God actually ‘cool’ with that grudge you’ve been nursing? Are you willing to bet your eternity on it?
