Trump Gets Hero’s Welcome As First Of The Final Wave Of Hostages Arrive Home

For as long as many of us have been alive, Peace In The Middle East has been almost a throwaway phrase meaning that hoped-for thing that will likely never come, a wistful ‘sweet by-and-by’, and nothing more.

Until an administration came along and refused to play by the ‘tried and true’ negotiation strategies that never seem to move the ball down the field (or any field?) in the direction we are trying to move it. He built a ‘coalition of the willing’ of regional powers with skin in the game and kept hammering away at objections until they finally found enough of a common ground that we could start talking about WHEN, rather than IF the war ends, the hostages come home, and both sides stop killing each other over what someone else did to them yesterday.

There are still plenty of ways this can go horribly wrong, and folks who will actively sabotage these efforts, but for all of that? People who had been held in unthinkable captivity for years after being dragged from their homes are now returning to the families who have never given up hope.

The sobering fact that only men are among the hostages being returned alive, and not any women or children we will set aside for another conversation.

For today, we will celebrate and be thankful for those who have returned home, and the ready prospect of a lasting peace if both sides are willing to take it.
