Watch: Christian Dads Say, ‘Kids Should Be Taught How To Shoot Guns’
The best way to make sure kids have a healthy respect for firearms is to teach that respect in the home.
Sheltering kids from any exposure to guns, and warning them how bad they are doesn’t make kids any safer.
We’ve all known families who tried that approach with their kids and sex only to become grandparents a lot sooner than they expected.
There’s a better way. The ‘taboo’ and the ‘mystery’ is part of what makes young hotheads do stupid things with firearms. (You don’t have to look any further than any ‘gangster pose’ on some dopey kid’s social media pic to see this.)
So get rid of the mystery. Treat firearms the way you would power tools. Rather than forbidding any exposure, teach a healthy respect with a strong emphasis on all the important safety aspects.
And EASE the kid into it. Just like you’d start a little kid with an electric screwdriver long before you introduced the table saw, it’s also a bad idea start little junior with the piece Dirty Harry used to ask that punk if he felt ‘lucky’.
