WATCH: Pet Shop Boys New Song Ridicules Addicts Of Social Media And It’s PERFECT

The 80s British synth-pop duo has taken aim at one of the contemporary vices. Check it out…

The Pet Shop Boys, are currently working on a new album due out this fall to follow their 2016 release, Super. In the meantime, the duo — Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe — are releasing an EP with 4 songs on Friday.

The Pet Shop Boys are preparing the world for the EP by releasing one song every day. Of the new EP, Tennant says, “It contains three satirical songs and one rather sad song. I think it’s because of the times we’re living through.” “On Social Media,” the new track that the duo shared this morning, is absolutely one of the satirical songs, though maybe you could argue that it’s rather sad, too.

Americans are spending more and more time on Social Media, especially teens. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp, Pinterest, LinkedIn, are all places we go to interact with the world through our digital devices. As neat as it is to find someone with similar interests on the other side of the world, Social Media can paradoxically isolate people. in-person interactions can drop, and depression and anxiety are key symptoms of Social Media Addiction.

Anonymous accounts allow people to hide who they which often brings out the worst in people. Twitter is a particularly toxic environment with that kind of thing rampant.

Here are some quick facts about Social Media from Brandwatch:

No wonder the Pet Shop Boys wanted to tackle the issue head-on.

From the song:

When you care about the issues of the day
and check your facts on Wikipedia
You can get into an argument right away
if you’re on social media
The world is changing everywhere
with a speed that couldn’t be speedier
but you feel so ahead of the curve
when you’re on social media

Welp, I think they’ve got this one down pat. Although, I’m pretty sure that there are some people that don’t even bother to check Wikipedia before they post something completely stupid.

‘On Social Media’ is the second song that was released by the Pet Shop Boys. the first song was called, ‘Give Stupidity A Chance‘ and it mocked President Trump and the Brexit movement.

I guess every swing of the bat can’t be a home run.
