As if tension wasn’t ratcheted high enough already with the trial over George Floyd’s death, now we’ve all got this to deal with THIS, too?
Get ready for the name Daunte Wright to be added to the list of infamous names whose deaths are held up as rallying cries in protests.
The whole incident started as too many of these situations do, with what may have looked like a routine traffic stop.
According to a statement from Brooklyn Center Police, officers stopped an individual shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday after determining the driver had an outstanding warrant. Police said when they tried to arrest the driver, the driver reentered the vehicle and drove away. An officer fired at the vehicle, striking the driver. Police said the vehicle traveled several blocks before striking another vehicle.
Police did not identify the driver who was shot but said the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the person’s name following a preliminary autopsy and family notification. A female passenger sustained non-life threatening injuries during the crash.
A police officer was also transported to the hospital after sustaining injuries, according to EMS audio, the Star-Tribune reported. By Sunday evening, about 100 people had gathered near the scene, according to the newspaper. –WashingtonTimes
The man’s mom says she was on the phone with him at the time and gives the following account of events.
He added, “The mother says her son asked her for car insurance information over the phone, as the car was hers but she gave it to Daunte two weeks prior. She said she heard police tell Daunte to get out of the car and that they would explain why once he was out. The mother says she then heard someone yell ‘Daunte, don’t run.’ This is the story from the mother, told in front of crime scene tape. A blanket wrapped around her shoulders, crying in despair.”
In a video interview, Wright’s mother told reporters: “Then I heard the police officer come to the window and say put the phone down and get out of the car and Dante said why, and he said we will explain to you when you get out of the car. I heard the phone put on the dashboard or dropped. I heard scuffling and I heard the police officer say Daunte don’t run. Another officer said put the phone down and hung it up.” — Heavy
There are plenty of details missing from this account — missing details that leave no room for little things like ‘nuance’ or ‘intent’ on either side. Details that don’t explain, for example, what injuries the hospitalized cop has, and if they were the results of any actions taken by the now-deceased young man.
Among those details is the nature of the warrant.
The public didn’t wait for answers about what went wrong. They didn’t wait to find out what the warrant was for, or how the officer came to be injured.
A black man is dead, and someone behind a badge was responsible. That was all the information they wanted to know.
The popular narrative is that he was killed ‘because he had air fresheners’ hanging from his rearview mirror.
And of course, the usual idiots were there to inflame anger as much as they could.
And why should he care? It’s some OTHER person who will pay the price for the next thing that goes wrong. Some OTHER life gets thrown away by facing pointless rioting charges.

The National Guard has been called up to the Twin Cities.
Even so, the night broke badly.
There was looting, destroyed cop cars, and at least three businesses are being described as ‘totally destroyed’.
