While India has been ravaged by COVID in recent weeks, hospitals are struggling to deal with the influx of patients and a shortage of both medication and oxygen, interest has grown in some rather questionable “alternative” treatments.
Doctors in India are warning people that “treatments” such as bathing in cow dung and drinking cow urine don’t do anything to prevent or treat COVID and carry their own risks.
“There are also health risks involved in smearing or consuming these products — other diseases can spread from the animals to humans,” Dr. J.A. Jayalal, national president of the Indian Medical Association, told Reuters.
In Hinduism, the cow is a scared symbol of life and earth.
Some residents of Gujarat in the western part of the country have been visiting cow shelters to rub the excrement on their bodies, then hug or honor the cows while the mixture dries.
When it does, it’s washed off with milk or buttermilk.

NOT A COVID CURE: People in one part of India are covering themselves in cow dung and urine as they believe it protects them from COVID-19. Yet doctors proclaim there is no scientific evidence. https://t.co/xnpS1ZSYLs pic.twitter.com/ZM6zDIfVfx

India sure does have a weird relationship with cow dung. There is a festival in one region where they fling cow pies at each other….for their health. They believe that cow dung has “medicinal properties.”

Perhaps the most shocking part of this story is that ClashDaily reported on Indian men bathing in cow dung back in March 2020.
Yes, just a few days before the now oh-so-distant “15 Days To Slow The Spread” we covered the spa from hell right here:
While The US And Israel Race To Develop Coronavirus Vaccine, Others Have Tried These Crazy ‘Cures’
Back then, there were also cow urine drinking parties to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus.
Look, I’m of Indian descent, and it’s this kind of thing that makes me say, “Thank God for colonialism!” Yeah, I know there are some truly awful things that happened, but there were some truly awful things that happened before the Brits arrived in India — the caste system and the practice of burning widows (sati) come to mind. And I’d posit that the good outweighs the bad. Sure, there are still people today who are bathing in cow sh!t thinking that it’s a “cure” for COVID, but a lot of that is because there is a rise in Hindu nationalism. And frankly, when you’ve got over a billion people in your country, you’re going to have more gullible idiots — that’s just a matter of statistics.
And while this is cow-poop bathing is just kind of gross-out funny, the situation in India is absolutely devastating. The cost of cremation has gone up due to demand, and the poor are doubly suffering in their grief. It appears that some have taken to dumping bodies into the Ganges River to dispose of people who have died from COVID at home.
Dozens of bodies have been washing up on the banks of the Ganges river as hospitals and crematoriums across India remain overwhelmed by the country’s rampant second wave of Covid-19.
Officials in the east Indian state of Bihar said in a statement Tuesday that at least 71 corpses washed up in the city of Buxar, adding that they were likely coming from India’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh. Similarly, officials in Uttar Pradesh said Tuesday that dozens of bloated and decomposed bodies were found on their side of the Ganges river in the district of Ghazipur.
Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, minister of water resources, said in a tweet Tuesday that the central government is seeking an investigation of the unidentified bodies, which are suspected to be of people who have died of Covid-19. He added that the unidentified bodies will be cremated as per the government’s pandemic safety protocols…
…[Ankit Gupta, a voluteer who works with the poor] also found that migrant workers and the poor were being overlooked in the country’s vaccination attempts. “These vaccines are only for the privileged people or the tech-savvy, what about those people who don’t have mobile phones or internet connections? How will they get the vaccine?”

It’s far past time to be grateful to President Trump who created the conditions with Operation Warp Speed to develop a vaccine in record time. Otherwise, the whole world would be in the same situation as India right now.
