ROB FORD! Everything That Is Wrong With Politics

Written by Patrick Kane on November 16, 2013

A gluttonous void of integrity, stuffed with narcissism and held together by seemingly nothing but a boundless suture of constant lies, Rob Ford embodies everything that is wrong with politicians. Despite an almost record breaking number of gaffes and scandals, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has refused to resign

By his felonious behavior, almost compulsive penchant for bold lies, and hysterically insincere apologies, Rob Ford is unintentionally the World’s most honest politician. Through this horror show of lies, drugs, rage, and scandal that has been Ford’s incumbency, he has given the world a unique and refreshingly honest glimpse into the soul of politics. Ford is not exceptional in his behavior, he is not a deviation from your average politician, he is the pure, unadulterated soul of politics. He is the reason why the answers to our problems is not simply electing the right people next year.

“The unscrupulous and uninhibited are likely to be more successful in a society tending toward totalitarianism.” – FA Hayek

Economist Fredrich Hayek wrote about why the worst get on top in politics. Hayek argued that narcissists and sociopaths don’t get into power by accident in a democracy, but rather that they get into power because the system is made especially for them.

It takes a certain type of personality to want to control other people’s lives. Most normal people couldn’t imagine something they would rather do less than tell others how to live. The man who could be trusted with political power would never want the job. It is only the power hungry demigod that desires such a position; and these are the only people who can palate running for office, let alone get elected. It is the paradox of democracy that those who would make good rulers would never want the job; and those who want to rule others should never have it.

Not only does Ford lack the personal integrity to not commit crimes that would cost the average citizen years of his life in prison; he lacks the integrity to step down from office after being caught on video doing the very things he denied he did a week earlier.

It seems that now his only agenda is to keep himself in office. Ford does whatever he wants without consequence. When he gets caught on film, he denies any wrongdoing until he absolutely has to. He then makes a television appearance to insincerely repent his sins, and then goes back, commits some other horrendous act and then repeats the cycle.

The thought of stepping down from office seems to never occur to him. The country he was elected in has almost no impeachment system, so he has no reason to ever abdicate his position. Whatever Ford does, whether it be smoking crack in an alley or raving about how bicyclists should be killed on the streets of Toronto, he can walk away from any scandal unscathed.

This is the sardonic dream of any person ever elected to office. It’s a shame he isn’t American, he would be the secret darling of all of Washington.

Rob Ford is the soul of politics, and he is everything that is wrong with politics. He is the ability to lie with compunction and to apologize without shame. He is the lust for power unchecked by humility. Ford’s personality makes him a perfect politician, and a terrible person.
