Hey Snowflake. Look at this guy, look at yourself, and ask yourself about ‘American Greatness’.
Do you remember THIS sideshow during the election?
Butthurt students in a CANADIAN university try to bully a student into taking off his Pro-Trump MAGA hat, and insist that ‘Hate speech’ is not permitted on campus, and that his hat apparently qualifies … and she goes into the usual convoluted ad-hominem arguments about Republicans.
She physically removes the hat from his head because she can’t bear to see an idea she finds repulsive.
(This is the same crowd that used to say if you don’t like what you’re seeing on TV, change the channel, on the radio … turn it off. They would also say if you don’t want to see overweight guys sporting assless chaps in the Pride Parade… just don’t attend.)
Bill Clinton was making smug comments about what it meant to ‘Make America Great Again’.
It always comes back to racism, sexism, homophobia. Because that’s the only language these people speak. Because everything has to be heroes and villains with them… with Conservatives always playing the role of villains. It’s easier than engaging the issues of the day. Just denounce us as evil and collect the votes.
But John Glenn shows us it isn’t so simple.
Senator Glenn came from a time where America had a particular kind of Greatness that no President would explain away or apologize for. (Looking at YOU Obama.)
He served in WWII. He was a Test Pilot. He led America into the great Space Race that we had with the Soviets. (If you didn’t hear about it in school, look it up.)
The things he did were Risky. People died. There were no Federal safety rules for space travel.
You did your best and hoped it worked.
Sometimes… things went wrong. Lethal mistakes.
That was part of the risk they signed up for.
RISK TAKING was part of what made America Great.
Risk Taking in entrepreneurialism… led to the great manufacturing companies that built Detroit into one of the world’s Wealthiest cities… for a time.
Risk taking in research led to new discoveries.
The Wright Brothers led us to Space Travel.
Having HEROES that took risks (looking at you John Glenn) led others to challenge their own limits… THEIR greatness inspired greatness in others. It became contagious.
And then we stopped. We traded GREAT for SAFE.
We accepted a bubble-wrap society. We elevated a party whose aim was a government big enough to meet all of our needs. To protect us from dangers associated with risk. The entire country accepted too easily a version of ‘Too Big To Fail’.
Compare that to Samuel Adams:
“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.”
He was fighting such thinking even then. He knew a thing or two about what would make America great.
Whatever one might say that it was… here is what it was NOT, precious snowflake: ‘freedom’ from conflict… from offense.. from ideas you dislike… and from hurt feelings.
As long as you embrace these false ‘freedoms’ you can never embrace the Risk that propelled America to such (literal and metaphorical) dizzying heights.
It’s not too late, little snowflakes. You need not buy the lie your profs are peddling. You’re at a fork in the road.
