Pastor Goes After Trump With Mike Pence Sitting In The Congregation – Was He Right Or Wrong?
Was the pastor speaking ‘Truth to Power’ or needlessly politicizing the pulpit?
When he ascends the pulpit, what is the pastor’s role? To single out a single person in the audience? Or to speak eternal truths to the entire congregation?
Because when the Vice President went to Church on Sunday, the pastor had a ‘veiled’ message for the White House.

We wonder if he would have spoken quite so boldly if it were proven that the known liar and political opportunist Dick Durbin made the whole thing up, or twisted the comments into something far more damning than they really were.
VP Pence was visiting a Maryland Church and, while he was sitting there, got an earful.
On Sunday, while delivering a sermon before many congregants from the countries that Donald Trump referred to as “shitholes,” Metropolitan Baptist pastor Maurice Watson held nothing back, calling the president’s racism “visceral” and “dehumanizing.”
“I stand today as your pastor to vehemently denounce and reject any such characterizations of the nations of Africa and of our brothers and sisters in Haiti… And I further say: Whoever made such a statement, whoever used such a visceral, disrespectful, dehumanizing adjective to characterize the nations of Africa, whoever said it, is wrong. And they ought to be held accountable.”

Interesting. God isn’t normally big on virtue signaling.
The pastor had the Vice President in attendance. He could quite easily have requested to speak privately with him and relate his concerns in a way that might actually be heard.
Especially when the majority of witnesses at the meeting in question disputed the quote he was so publicly condemning.
Doesn’t the Bible have a thing or two to say about bearing false witness?
Saying a politically popular thing does not take courage. Especially when you are being critical of someone your particular audience may agree with.
It would take far more courage to lead the audience to pray for Gods grace and wisdom to guide those who govern us, of either party.
How could a pastor show far more courage, on the day where the nation remembers the courage and passion of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr? For starters, whether you lead a ‘black’ church or a ‘white’ one, you might preach from Galatians 3:
But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.
It might show far more courage in this day and age, to NOT make identity politics of any sort other than the identity with Christ a feature of the modern American pulpit.
But perhaps, courage like that is hard to find.
