Comey: When Interviewed By A Real Journalist, It’s A Whole Other Story

Finally, Bret Baier hits Comey with something besides softball questions about Russian hookers.

Comey danced around a lot, but he played his hand in some ways that he hadn’t before.

Maybe he maxxed out his all-access pass to CNN and the other Media(D) outlets. Finally Comey’s book tour brought him to a news outlet that hit him with some interesting questions, instead of just looking for new ways to slag the President.

Substantive questions were ASKED, certainly.

Which is funny considering how often Fox gets tagged as ‘Faux’ News by the critics. When’s the last time you heard one of the Other ‘big cable news networks’ hold Comey’s feet to the fire? For those guys, back in 2016, feet to the fire would have been a poor substitute for ‘head on a pike’.

Fox News host Bret Baier discussed his interview with former FBI Director James Comey on “Fox & Friends” Friday and described it as “tense.”

“I started with the Clinton probe and got to the Trump probe, and started to go down the leaking questions there. Obviously it was tense — back and forth,” Baier said. “But in the commercial break he turned to me said, hey those are tough but fair questions.”

Were any of those questions answered?

Or, put differently, answered to your satisfaction?

You can judge that for yourself.

He asked questions about why he didn’t call Hillary ‘negligent’.

About Cheryl Mills.

About why there was no Grand Jury.

About why the investigation was conducted from HQ.

About Loretta Lynch’s reply to his allegations.

I have known James Comey almost 30 years. Throughout his time as Director we spoke regularly about some of the most sensitive issues in law enforcement and national security. If he had any concerns regarding the email investigation, classified or not, he had ample opportunities to raise them with me both privately and in meetings. He never did.”

About his communications with Congress.

About the Weiner case being ‘slow-walked’ by FBI HQ.

About Popadopalous timelines.

About his knowledge of ‘the dossier’.

And so on.

What were some of the takeaways?

First, from Baier himself:

“What struck me were a couple of things,” Baier continued. “One, was that after all this time and after all the talk about the dossier, that he did not know that the Democrats, the DNC and Hillary Clinton were funding that? That was pretty shocking.”

Another observer highlighted this piece of the conversation:

COMEY: My recollection was there was a significant amount of additional material about Page and why there was probable cause to believe he was an agent of a foreign power. And the dossier was part of that but was not all of it or a critical part of it, to my recollection.

BAIER: The intel briefing at Trump Tower. You briefed the president-elect on the sliver of the dossier, really the salacious part about the prostitutes in Moscow and that allegation.

COMEY: Correct.

BAIER: Didn’t include anything broader than that, right?

COMEY: Correct. My mission in that private briefing was just to tell him about that slice of it.

What’s interesting about that one is the fact that that ‘salacious’ dossier was front page news in the coming days, and this meeting BECAME the very ‘news hook’ that he warned Trump they were looking for.

For many on the right — this writer included — the most obvious problem with Comey’s answers was his inability say who had funded the dossier. It’s not like this is unrealated to his story at all. Republican interest in Fusion GPS’s “Oppo Research” ended a month before Hillary and Steele got on the case.

Putting responsibility for it on ‘Republican’ shoulders is more than a little dishonest.

It’s shifty. Weasel-y even.

But of course, Comey would tell us, he ‘doesn’t do sneaky things.’ Right?
