You know it’ll be a doozy when the story begins by telling you he’s a feminist and a community organizer serving time in prison.
What landed him in prison? He shot a ‘friend’ dead in broad daylight because someone called him a bitch.
Somebody’s gotta say it: An overreaction like that basically proved the dead guy’s point.
Of course, the problem isn’t that he was a moron with zero self-control who didn’t value the lives of others. Nah. Couldn’t be that.
Nope. He’s blaming circumstance. Cartoons. Video games. Socialization and patriarchy.
Granted, most of the men I had this conversation with are in prison with me, but when 98% of mass murders are committed by men, and 90% of all murders are committed by men and 80% of those arrested for violent acts are men, it’s safe to say there is something wrong with how our culture socializes men.
Patriarchy is a social system that defines men as being inherently violent, dominant and controlling while rewarding them with power for being that way. It is no secret, especially these days, that we live in a patriarchal society. Why are we continually surprised when a man takes up arms and commits mass murder?

OR, just MAYBE it could something completely unrelated.
It could be that when MEN go off the rails, it looks different than when women do because there are psycho-social realities that pop-culture social justice dogma just can’t account for.
Maybe he hasn’t figured this out yet, but a HUGE percentage of the young punks in there didn’t have a dad, or at least one they could call a role model. One well-meaning nun and Hallmark discovered that fact by accident in a story shared by Richard Rohr. Short version, the men in prison clamored for Mothers’ Day Cards, using up all 1000 that Hallmark had donated. But the Fathers’ Day cards went unused.
So any claims of Patriarchy go right out the window the second you realize that the fundamental problem of many prison inmates is precisely BECAUSE there were no decent ‘patriarchs’ in their lives. Their violence is a function of the LACK of a dad.
Before you call it a ‘social construct’ the same dynamic is seen among elephants. Without a strong male role model, young males go rogue and extremely violent. Do they want us to believe elephants have a ‘patriarchy problem’?
Instead of masculinity being toxic, it actually reigns in natural masculine aggression and channels it into a competitive spirit. It shows up in athletics or difficult, strenuous work most often in the service of protecting others.
They gravitate to difficult or dangerous jobs. Fire fighters. Search and Rescue. Park Rangers. Soldiers. Police. EMT’s. Test pilots. Oil Rig workers. Miners and fisherman. The trades.
That same aggression is also harnessed into ambition and drive that leads to creating world-changing companies like Apple, Ford, Uber and Amazon. They lead discoveries in medical research.
They become people like Elon Musk building a reusable rocket… “just because”.
That guy’s world consists of unhinged punks without any real sense of direction or purpose in their lives. He blew somebody away because he got his widdle feewings hurt.
He robbed banks because he couldn’t make rent.
That’s not manly. Not remotely.
This guy is part of a CNN special. Here’s the problem. The solution he is looking for won’t be found by getting in touch with his feminine side. He doesn’t need pajamas and a cup of cocoa. He needs a better view of what it really means to step up.
If he was really looking for answers, this would be a good place to start.
