CBS ‘Fact-Checks’ Trump, Quickly Deletes It When Correction Proves Trump’s Point

Here is reason 13,225,224 why we call them ‘fake news’.
There was a time, we are told, when journalists were first and foremost, ‘professionals’.
They would, we are told, follow the facts of a story wherever it leads, and report on whatever they found.
Of course, it’s entirely possible that the existence of any age such journalism is more myth than reality. The honest professionals, in this case, would be the exception that proves the rule.
Regardless of whether such an age of honest, impartial journalists ever did exist, it is dead today, and this is the sort of story that proves it.
When Trump first announced he was to address the nation from the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office, TV networks were abuzz over whether they should even cover it at all. Then they decided to run it so they could offer an Anti-Trump rebuttal, and control the narrative.
They also decided to ‘Fact-check’ [read: ‘spin’] Trump’s speech so that viewers would come away with the impressions the Media(D) would WANT them to have.
When Trump quoted a statistic that 1 of every 3 women coming across the border is being sexually assaulted, that claim got red-flagged as inaccurate. It WAS inaccurate. That number was far too LOW.
So CBS offered a correction to ‘prove Trump Wrong’.
Fact check: 1 in 3 women sexually assaulted while traveling to cross the border
CLAIM: The president claimed one in three women have been sexually assaulted traveling to the border.
FACT: Between 60 percent and 80 percent of female migrants traveling through Mexico are raped along the way, Amnesty International estimates.
Amnesty International is helping make Trump’s ‘illegal border crossing from Mexico is dangerous to vulnerable women’ argument STRONGER.
That just will not do.
As noted by Chris Menahan, for some peculiar reason, they deleted that particular factoid from their hit piece against Trump.
It has been removed from their main piece, without any apparent strikeout or update mention.
They also backpedaled on their criticism on the Vietnam numbers.
Correction: This item has been updated to reflect that over 58,2000 Americans died in the Vietnam War, not 58,200 people. The overall death toll from the war, including Vietnamese troops and civilians, was much higher.
They’re starting with the assumption that he’s wrong, and working backward from the premise.
Meanwhile, in a claim where Trump actually LOWBALLED the threat to women and children being abused they removed all reference to the correction at all. Is it because their correction underscores the President’s compassionate point about the urgency of protecting vulnerable women from being preyed upon by the opportunistic sadists who control the other side of the border?
It makes that “Trump’s a woman-hating monster” a much tougher sell, too.
So CBS nuked that piece of ‘fact-checking’.
So much for following the story wherever it leads.
Then again, what should really we expect from the ‘Dan Rather’ network… integrity?
