Lawmaker Faces Fines And Prison — Over Christian Faith

Written by Wes Walker on February 20, 2020

You might expect this in an Islamic or Communist state… but in a supposedly Progressive Western nation?

By now, we’re sadly accustomed to reporting stories from China, Indonesia and elsewhere about the harsh treatment of their religious minorities — in particular, Christian religious minorities have taken a beating worldwide.

But it’s still somewhat shocking to see Christians facing threats of prison time over something as basic as their religious expression.

On the other hand, considering what the prison time is being threatened over, it’s hardly surprising. This is a particularly aggressive and vindictive group demanding full-throated obedience to the latest revisions of the PC cultural rulebook — or else.

On paper, Finland is a ‘Christian’ nation. Seventy percent would describe themselves as belonging to the leading denomination there — Lutheran. But in practice, less than a third of Finns affirm a belief in God.

In THAT context, suddenly, what comes next starts to make more sense.

Päivi Räsänen is under two investigations for allegedly defaming or insulting homosexuals. The first after she shared a Bible verse on Twitter last year aimed at Finland’s Lutheran church for promoting the homosexual lifestyle.

Räsänen told us, “In my tweet, I directly cited Romans first chapter and verses 24 to 27 and posted the picture of the passages from the Bible.” The passage condemns homosexuality.

Finland’s Prosecutor General has now opened a second investigation concerning a pamphlet that Päivi wrote 15 years ago about Biblical Christian marriage, called “Man and woman, He created them.”

It is biblical teaching that the Finnish constitution says it supports. Räsänen told us that because of that, she assumed the investigation would not go anywhere.

“Yes, yes, I assumed. In fact, it was a surprise for me that there is even a police investigation about that case. I wouldn’t have believed it.

Leif Nummela, editor of a Christian newspaper and a Christian TV host in Finland told us, “I thought that this couldn’t happen. It was unbelievable. It was a real surprise. And my first thought was, ‘are they really going this far’?”

The Lutheran pastor who published the pamphlet Päivi wrote on Christian marriage is also under investigation. CBN

Somehow, Finland went from tolerating alternative definitions of marriage and sexual expression — to CRIMINALIZING anyone who affirms the traditional definitions.

You can bet that was not on the brochure when they were sold a country based on ‘tolerance’.

We have seen similar trends criminalizing the citation of traditional Christian belief, and even scripture elsewhere — it has even happened in our own backyard in Canada.

The big difference between these places and America is a First Amendment that defends us.

But the Left is already looking for ways to define certain kinds of speech as ‘hate’, and out of the reach of First Amendment protections.

If you think this fight isn’t coming here sooner rather than later, well, you just haven’t paying attention.
