Dr. Norman Oliver doesn’t seem to care that more than a third of Americans don’t want to take a vaccine that has been rushed to market.
In an interview on Friday with ABC 8 News, the State Health Commissioner, Dr. Norman Oliver, said that once a vaccine has been made available to the public, he will make it mandatory for Virginians.
Virginia state law gives the Commissioner of Health the authority to mandate immediate immunizations during a public health crisis if a vaccine is available. Health officials say an immunization could be released as early as 2021.
Dr. Oliver says that, as long as he is still the Health Commissioner, he intends to mandate the coronavirus vaccine.

The Virginia General Assembly has been holding a special session discussing dealing with COVID-19, reopening the state, and racial equality.
One of the things that state officials are considering is bill providing a religious exemption from the mandated coronavirus vaccine. The new bill still needs to clear a committee in the House of Delegates before it can be voted on in the full chamber.
Dr. Oliver says that he opposes that bill. He said that when it comes to COVID-19, “public health should take precedent over personal choice.”
He added, “It is killing people now, we don’t have a treatment for it and if we develop a vaccine that can prevent it from spreading in the community we will save hundreds and hundreds of lives.”
Dr. Oliver says that a government-mandated vaccine is the best way to achieve herd immunity.
Dr. Oliver wants to mandate a vaccine for an illness where the vast majority of people who contract it recover.
A new Marist poll shows that more than one in three Americans don’t want to take the vaccine once it’s available. Most of the concern with a COVID-19 vaccine isn’t the usual anti-vaxxer concerns, but rather the rush to get a vaccine out that could compromise the safety of it.
Although health officials have assured the public that the vaccine will be safe, some remain skeptical because of the speed at which the vaccine is being developed.
But hey, don’t worry, it’ll all be just fine.
Virginia Public Health will probably keep you comfortable while the doctors and the government have a discussion about what will happen to you.
Here’s a clip of Governor Northam saying just that:
Oh, wait…that was the wrong video clip. Sorry about that.
