Remember that scene in Braveheart where William Wallace said he was ‘going to pick a fight’? Would it surprise you to learn that Jesus has some of that same fighting spirit?
We’ve heard the gospel accounts of Jesus crossing swords with the Pharisees enough times that the can feel ho-hum familiar. But when you slow down and notice the details, even the oldest and most familiar stories can come alive again.
While Jesus was showing up to reunite a wayward people to the God who loves them, the religious hall monitors of his day were showing up with their clipboards looking for rules violations.
They were cancel culture before cancel culture was cool.
Jesus didn’t just pick a fight with them, he ripped the mask off of their empty, arrogant version of religion, exposing it as the fraud it was with everyone in the room looking on.
The two groups that were hostile to Christ’s message are the same two groups it continues to see opposition from today.
